About Decant
Decant looks like a test-tube colour-sorting puzzle, but it quietly rewrites the rule everyone knows: here, colour is density. Click a tube to lift its top band — the lightest exposed colour — then click another to pour it, and instead of stacking on top, that band sinks to its own weight layer in the target tube, sliding under lighter colours and shoving them upward. Every tube stays permanently sorted heaviest-at-the-bottom, which is exactly how you dig a colour out of the middle of a stack: drop something heavier and watch the pile reorder itself. You win by sorting each colour into its own tube, with five undos and a handful of empty tubes as scratch space — though fill both empties and you have boxed yourself in. Merging same-colour bands and setting up cascade pours that chain into their own merges is where the points and the elegance live. There is a shared daily puzzle with a streak to protect, plus easy, normal and hard boards. It is free in the browser, and beating par pays a completion bonus.
How to play
- Click a tube to pick it up, then click another to pour — click the same tube again to cancel.
- A pour lifts the whole top band (the lightest exposed color) and sinks it to its density layer in the target tube.
- Every tube stays sorted heaviest-at-the-bottom, so a poured band can slide under lighter ones and push them up.
- Sort every color into its own tube to win. You get five undos per board.
Strategy & tips
- Colors are ranked by weight, not just hue — a heavy band sinks past lighter ones, which is how you dig colors out of the middle.
- Use the empty tubes as scratch space, but do not fill both or you lose your room to manoeuvre.
- Look for pours that merge two bands of the same color: fewer bands means fewer moves.
- Set up cascades — one pour that displaces a band into its own merge chains bonus points.
- Beat par to earn the completion bonus, and undo early rather than pouring your way deeper into a deadlock.
FAQ
How is Decant different from other water sorting games?
Color is density. A poured band does not just stack on top — it sinks to its own layer and pushes lighter bands up, so tubes reorder themselves as you play.
What is the daily puzzle?
Everyone gets the same board each day. Solve it on consecutive days to build a streak, which is saved in your browser.
What happens if I get stuck?
If no legal pour remains, the game tells you — use Undo to step back, or start a new board.
Is Decant free?
Yes — it plays free in your browser with no download or sign-up, on desktop and mobile.
